Hope walked down the corridor on her way to Dr Scott's office for her psych eval. She was nervous due to the fact all she thought she was going to be doing on the Sirona was clean, now with so many more responsibilities she just wants to make a good impression. As she approached the office door she took a deep breath, paused, then touched the chime.

"Come in," Brennyn called out, having just finished skimming the personnel file of the person at her door. She preferred to form her own opinions about people most of the time, but she also wanted to have a sense of what they had been through, and based on what she'd read about Hope, that had been quite a lot.

The door slid opened and Hope stepped through. "Hello Doctor, I'm Ensign Hope Martin." She offered her hand to Brennyn. "I know I'm early, I can come back if you like."

Brennyn shook her hand and offered Hope warm smile. "That will not be necessary. I truly appreciate someone who comes early. Please," she added, gesturing to her reception area, "have a seat wherever you're comfortable. May I get you something from the replicator?"

Hope shook her head, "No thank you, I'm fine." She smiled back as she took a seat.

Taking her own seat across from Hope, Brennyn explained, "I like to use these initial psychological evaluations as a chance to get to know people, mostly. I'm also interested in how you're doing, of course, but my thought is, if we get to know one another now, when and if you do have specific things on your mind, you'll at least know who you might be able to turn to. Naturally, if there's anything on your mind now that's bothering you, I'm here to help."

"Yes, of course. That sounds reasonable." Hope nodded then folded her hands in her lap. "What would you like to know?"

"Well," Brennyn began, "I've your file, so I know a bit about your history, but I also realize your file contains things that Starfleet considers important, not necessarily what you think is important or what you think accurately represents who you are. So, at the risk of sounding like a cheesy interviewer, will you tell me a little about yourself?"

Hope shifted uncomfortably in her seat, she didn't like talking about herself and the thought of it made her skin crawl. "Well..." She thought for a moment. "well... I was left at the Bajoran shrine on DS9 just after I was born. No one knows who my actual parents are, but my adoptive mother and father couldn't be any more perfect and I love them dearly." She rubbed her hand up and down her arm. "I only had one friend growing up, Elloise. She was amazing." Hope's eyes soften and a warm smile sneaked across her face. "I was bullied quite often, but she was a little fireball and stood up for me. We were inseparable... until I went of to the academy and she went to culinary school." The smile faded away. "I was focused on my studies, two years before I finished she opened her restaurant... and met her husband." there was some hostility in her voice as she mentioned him. "He made her close the restaurant, and moved her back to Earth." She shook her head. "I got to spend more time with her though." she sighed "She changed though, she was timid and scared. He would hit her..." She looked of to one side and glared at nothing. Then she gave a half laugh and smile. "I stole her away though. That's why she's here with me. Once her divorce is finalized we will get married." She sat back and looked at Brennyn. "I don't know what else to tell you..."

"Well," Brennyn remarked with a smile, "you've told me quite a lot. It sounds like you're quite the survivor," Scott added. Brennyn was curious about Elloise and how she was coping with all of the changes in her life, but for now she knew she needed to focus on Hope. "My understanding is you were originally assigned to the ship as a janitor, and now you've been promoted to a different position. That's a curious development and quite the adjustment in itself."

Hope nodded in agreement. "Yes... yes I was hired as the janitor and I have been promoted. I..." Hope cleared her throat. "I'm still quite confused by all of it honestly." Hope squinted for a few moments as the past few days went through her mind again. "I never thought that I would make such a jump so quickly... I was literally only on the ship for a few hours..." She looked back at Brennyn. "Don't get me wrong, I'm very honored to have the new responsibilities. It's just such... a shock."

"That makes perfect sense," Scott replied with a nod. "Frankly, I was just as surprised when I saw the change, not because I doubted your qualifications, but because I knew it would be completely unexpected on your part and quite an adjustment for you. I know you're happy and grateful, but I also wanted to reassure you it's okay to feel unsure and to need help as you adjust. As I said, it's not that I don't believe you're capable, I just know that getting something you really want doesn't entirely erase all of the feelings and doubts that came before. I'm here to help you sort all of that out and perhaps to talk through the thoughts and feelings surrounding past events."

Scott knew the promotion was offered with the best of intentions, but she also knew emotionally, it didn't mean Hope had fully healed from the past.

Hope looked down at her hands and said softly. "Thank you Doctor Scott, I appreciate that." She took a deep breath and cleared her throat then looked back up at Brennyn. "Was there anything else you want me to talk about?"

In truth, there were several things Brennyn could have brought up, including Hope's history of being bullied, as well as how her dual heritage impacted her sense of self, but for an initial evaluation, Scott had accomplished what she sought out to accomplish and she recognized it was too early in Hope's tenure to truly detect potential impairments. "I'm satisfied for now," Scott offered sincerely. "I know you haven't had much time to settle into your new role, so it's hard for you to really know how you'll be impacted going forward, but I'm glad you know my door is always open. In the meantime, please tell Elloise I'd be happy to see her if she'd like. I don't want to push, but it sounds like it might be beneficial."

Hope smiled and stood from her chair with her hand out to shake Brennyn's. "Thank you I will."

Brennyn shook Hope's hand and smiled. "Take care."
